Webinar: Greek Documentary Practice in Egypt from Byzantium to Islam (6th-8th c.)

Lajos Berkes (Institute for Papyrology, University of Heidelberg) is offering in Winter Semester 2016/17, in cooperation with Heidelberg's Center for Cultural Heritage, an online seminar on Greek Documentary Practice in Egypt from Byzantium to Islam (6th-8th c.). The course is free of charge and will take place Thursdays, 16:15 - 17:45, Central European Time. The first meeting will be October 20, 2016 and the course will run until February 9, 2017. The language of instruction is English, and good knowledge of Greek is required. Certificates will be issued upon successful completion of the class.

Those wishing to take part should send a statement of interest and CV to Michaela Böttner (boettner@uni-heidelberg.de) by September 30. Questions about the course can be directed to Laios Berkes (lios.berkes@uni-heidelberg.de). Please be advised that the number of people who will be permitted to participate is limited to ten.

Course Description

Papyri from Egypt are extraordinary sources of information about documentary practice of the early Byzantine empire. Tens of thousands of letters, contracts, receipts and other documents shed light on aspects of everyday life that can barely be seen elsewhere around the Mediterranean. After the Islamic conquest in 642, Greek continued to be employed both in the private sphere and administration, where it was used probably up to the early 9th century. In this webinar we will decipher, translate and interpret documents both on papyrus and other writing materials (ostraca, parchment, etc.) written in Greek from a variety of genres and contexts from Byzantine and early Islamic Egypt.
Discussion of the documents will include paleographic, historical and linguistic aspects. Through comparison with parallel material from other provinces we will look at the problem of the uniqueness of the Egyptian papyri: to what extent do they represent realities of the Byzantine empire? Special emphasis will also be placed on the status of the Greek language and Hellenic culture under Islamic rule.

The ERC Starting Grant Project “ACO” at the University of Bamberg is currently seeking a Doctoral or Post-doctoral researcher (“linguistic position”)
(E 13 TV-L, 65% for doctoral, 100% for postdoctoral researchers)
The position is intended to be filled as soon as possible (though it can be postponed a few months to suit the schedule of particularly strong candidates) for 3 years (doctoral researchers) or 18 months (postdocs).
Job description:
As part of an ERC-funded project on late antique Conciliar Acts, you will independently study linguistic phenomena present in these texts. Your research will focus on two main questions: first, you will track down traces of orality in these purported verbatim transcripts; second, you will study translation and re- translation processes between Latin and Greek (e.g., the Roman representatives at the Councils spoke in Latin; their statements are preserved in Greek, and these translations seem over-literal; one can witness this effect the other way around, in case Acts are preserved only in Latin; in case of Latin texts, it is sometimes difficult to determine whether we have the original or a re-translation). So far, almost nothing has been done in pursuit of these questions (though do check the introduction to Richard Price’s translation of Constantinople II). To be up to this task, you need an excellent command of both Greek and Latin, an interest in linguistic questions, and real enthusiasm to explore uncharted waters.
This position can be filled either by a doctoral researcher (for three years) or by a postdoc (for 18 months). Doctoral researchers may hand in their research as a Dr. phil. dissertation at the University of Bamberg, though this is not required.
Your profile:
  • Excellent master’s or doctoral degree in Linguistics (with a focus on Greek or Latin) or in any field of Classics, such as Greek Philology, Ancient History or Patristics
  • Proficiency in Ancient Greek and Latin, good to excellent knowledge of the modern languages generally used in Classics (English, German, French, and Italian)
  • Willingness and ability for independently opening up a new field of research
  • High level of work discipline
    General Information:
The Faculty is an equal opportunity employer and encourages applications from female candidates. Among candidates otherwise equally qualified, preference will be given to candidates with disabilities.
The University of Bamberg has been certified by the Hertie Foundation as a family-friendly university and is committed to providing measures to help reconcile professional and family life.
    Application:
Please send your application via e-mail as one combined PDF document to peter.riedlberger@uni- bamberg.de. Use English, German, French, and Italian for authoring your application.

    Your application must include:
    • a brief cover letter addressing your qualifications, your intended starting date and any other relevant item
    • aCV
    • graded university transcripts and certificates; in case of the applicants without a doctorate, also
include your graduation certificate from secondary school (“Abiturzeugnis” for Germans)
    • your commentary on a short passage excerpted from the Acts; please focus on linguistic questions, and do not write more than one page (even half a page should be sufficient); you can
download text to comment upon from www.riedlberger.de/linguistic
Your application may include:
  • anything that may prove your proficiency in Ancient Greek and Latin, such as additional diplomas, awards, publications etc.
  • anything that may prove your excellence in scholarly work, such as publications, reviews of your publications etc.
You do not need to include any letters of recommendation.
If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me at peter.riedlberger@uni-bamberg.de. I have put together some further information which might be of interest to prospective candidates; you can find the document at www.riedlberger.de/inf-applicants
Review of applications will begin on July 15, 2016. The position will remain open until filled.

GR-10674-Athina
Excmo.

Dear colleagues,

As you surely know, the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in association with various Greek Institutions, such as the Municipality of Thessaloniki which has been its most loyal partner so far, has organized Summer Schools of Byzantinology in Greece during the period 2009 to 2014.

In 2015 the Summer School did not take place, mostly due to financing issues. Nevertheless, the initiative has been a great success so far and a large number of PhD students from all over the world have participated in the past Schools. Many of my colleagues, as well as students, encouraged me to continue this initiative, in a time when the economic difficulties which affect the whole research community endanger the continuation of the Byzantinology studies. After careful consideration, I am inclined to begin with the organization of the 7th Summer School, with the theme "State religion, religion for the State". So far, I have contacted several colleagues, who are willing to participate and the EHESS could finance their participation. However, due to the complete lack of financing ability on the Greek side, because of the current dramatic economic situation of the country, I am not able to ensure scholarships to finance the students' participation (Master's degree, doctorate or post-doc).
If students would like to participate, I could ensure a very low cost for them, that covers the expenses of participation, which are estimated to be around 45 € a day and include: accommodation in a good hotel and a dinner per day, as well as participation in the courses. The duration of the summer school would be reduced to 10 days. Still, in order for the Summer School to take place, it is necessary to ensure the participation of at least twenty five to thirty students. Time is short, and I would like your help, especially if you have students in Master's level (or students that will attend a Master's course next academic year), PhD students and post-docs who are interested in attending the courses by their own means or with funding from your Universities. In the case that in the coming week I will have the desirable requests for participation, I will proceed with the organization.
Therefore, I would like to ask you to discuss the issue with your students and possible candidates, in order to have an answer the soonest possible.
Warm regards,
Paolo Odorico
